Choose board using edge crush test results, burst strength, and flute construction. Record each value from the supplier’s certificate. A practical design should leave about 25 millimeters of internal clearance for cushioning. Keep the product centered. Fill empty spaces firmly, but avoid bulging the panels. Moisture matters. Store boxes above the floor, away from open doors and condensation.
Test a packed sample under ASTM D4169 or ISTA 3A procedures. These methods simulate drops, vibration, compression, and atmospheric conditioning. ASTM D5276 can guide free-fall drop testing. For heavier cartons, measure compression strength before and after humidity exposure. A box that survives a dry test may fail after a damp night in a container.
Our first trial was too optimistic. The corners looked strong, but the lower panel collapsed after stacking. We changed the board grade and added corner protection. Then the product shifted during vibration. That problem required better internal blocking, not thicker cardboard. Photograph every test, record carton weight, and inspect crushed edges. Small details reveal weak packaging. Sometimes, the strongest-looking box is poorly prepared.
